Early Arrivals Throw

Kyle McClellan and Jaime Garcia, and others, threw from the mound in Jupiter today as Memphis pitching coach Derek Lilliquist watched. Jim Palmer, former Orioles great, was also there watching. He commented "Nice" after watching Garcia pitch.

Jason Motte and some minor league pitchers are already in camp, too. Adam Wainwright is expected to arrive today. It would be good if Rich Hill showed up soon, also.

JUPITER, Fla. – Monday is “throw day” at the Roger Dean Stadium complex, a.k.a. the spring training headquarters of your St. Louis Cardinals. Under the gaze of Memphis Redbirds pitching coach Derek Lilliquist, a string of hurlers toiled off the mound this morning, among them lefthander Jaime Garcia and Kyle McClellan. Garcia, McClellan and the yet-to-arrive Rich Hill are considered the leading candidates for the rotation’s fifth spot.

The lefthanded Garcia, less than two years removed from Tommy John surgery, impressed at least one expert bystander with his unhurried delivery.

“Nice,” observed local resident, Baltimore Orioles broadcaster and Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer.

“Interesting,” the three-time Cy Young Award winner offered as Garcia continued.

If Jim Palmer said Garcia was "interesting", shouldn't we be proclaiming him into the HOF???

It reminds me of a friend of mine (also a Cards fan) who proclaimed that Rolen's power was back based on him hitting a line drive in a spring training game. It's wasn't, notwithstanding that line drive.
